Bottled memory / 병에 담긴 기억

Visiting Welsh castles during midterm. Inspiring ruins are everywhere. I originally made more highlights (below) but then subdued all but the main light through the window, as above.

중간 방학을 맞아 웨일즈의 성들을 찾아와 보았다. 인상적인 폐허들이 많다. 원래는 아래처럼 하이라이트를 많이 넣었는데 나중에는 창문을 통한 빛 외에는 위처럼 흐리게 만들었다.

Swollen, Guarded, and Tranquil View of the World / 부푼, 다잡힌, 고요한 시각

I was implementing Graham’s helpful suggestion when I couldn’t resist going wilder. I wanted to add hope to my rather desolate rendition of a lightening-stricken tree (below), but I didn’t want to make it an afterthought. The contrast between the strike and new leaves had to be the main theme. And probably the leaves wouldn’t need to be prominent—they just needed to be there, as “pennants”. So here they are.

그레이엄의 고마운 조언을 따라하던 중 더 격해지는 걸 참지 못했다. 너무 쓸쓸하게 그리고 만 벼락 맞은 나무 그림 (아래) 에 희망의 기운을 더하려던 참이었지만, 시늉으로만 하고 싶지는 않았다. 벼락과 새 잎 사이의 대비가 주제가 되어야 했다. 잎들이 그리 도드라져 보일 필요도 없을 것이다 – 희망의 ‘깃발’로 있어주면 충분할 테니까. 그래서 이렇게 그려 보았다.

After a bit of walk down the river, we found a right spot to sit down. They had theirs opposite us.

A bird from an egg, a castle from ruins.

In Budapest History Museum, I learned that Buda Castle was destroyed many times in sieges, including Soviet Red Army’s against Nazis, and that what we see is in large part reconstruction after the War. The Castle looked different afterwards. The architects saw the castle from the ruins, as Magritte did a bird from an egg.

부다페스트 역사 박물관에서, 부다 성이 나치가 소비에트 군대와 싸울 때를 포함해 여러 번 포위에서 파괴되었고, 지금 모습은 전쟁 후에 재건된 것이라는 사실을 배웠다. 그 건축가들은 폐허에서 성을 본 것이다. 마그리트가 알에서 새를 보았듯이.
