Sharks Booed! / 상어의 할로윈

Another Halloween for Creatures drawing, this time for sharks. As mentioned in “Halloween for Beans“:

Every Halloween, people wear as scary creatures, presumably laughing away the fear that way. So I made several drawings where different creatures wear as what scares them.

So what would scare sharks, themselves usually considered the scary ones? Would they be cheeky about their worries?

그렇다면 보통 무서움의 대상이 되곤 하는 상어에게는 무엇이 무서울까? 상어도 공포를 이렇게 장난기 어린 모습으로 웃어넘길 수 있을까?

Halloween for Beans / 콩의 할로윈

Every Halloween, people wear as scary creatures, presumably laughing away the fear that way. So I made several drawings where different creatures wear as what scares them.

This one is for beans. The mask is inspired by a Cameroon mask of a cow.

할로윈이면 사람들이 무서운 것들로 분장하곤 하는데, 두려움을 그렇게 웃어넘기는 게 아닌가 싶었다. 그래서 여러 생물들이 자기에게 무서운 것으로 분장하는 그림들을 그려 보았다.

여기서는 콩을 그렸다. 마스크는 카메룬 소 마스크에서 따왔다.

Paper Wings & A Felt Halo for Halloween Angel / 할로윈 천사 – 종이 날개 & 펠트 후광

My daughter wanted to be an angel this Halloween, so we made wings and a halo together.

Halo: We sewed a leftover piece of felt, first making a tube and then stitching it on alternating sides for a scintillating look. We first thought we’d make one floating over her head with wire, but I worried that it would be fragile, and she worried that it would look “childish”. So we ended up having it sit directly on her hair. Fortunately, the yellow worked well on her dark hair.

Wings: At first we thought of using real feathers on clothes on a wire frame. But we quickly realized that the feathers wouldn’t stick very well, and putting clothes on a wire frame may need a lot of work. So we instead made the wing with cardboard and feathers with embossed paper. The embossed paper worked wonders – it looked warm and soft. We painted the bottom blades of the wings (instead of covering them with paper feathers) to give them some sense of depth. We made straps out of leftover towels (not shown in the photos), so that she can wear them like a bag. On the left is the front side of the wings; on the right, back.

She was very happy wearing them and was anxious if we’d throw them away after Halloween. So we decided to keep them for decoration. It took 2-3 nights to make them, but it was rewarding.

딸아이가 할로윈에 천사가 되고 싶어해서 날개와 후광을 함께 만들었다.

후광: 남은 펠트 천 조각으로 만들었다. 먼저 길다란 튜브 모양으로 만든 뒤 옆부분을 이쪽 저쪽 번갈아가며 꿰매어 반짝이는 모양을 내었다. 처음에는 철사로 머리 위에 떠 있게 만들까 했는데, 나는 약해서 망가질까 염려했고, 아이는 너무 “애같아” 보일까봐 염려했다. 결국 머리 위에 띠처럼 바로 두르기로 했다. 다행히 노란 색이 검은 머리 색에 잘 어울렸다.

날개: 처음에는 진짜 깃털을 철사 틀에 씌운 천 위에 붙일까 했는데, 곧 깃털이 잘 떨어질 것이고, 천을 철사에 씌우기가 힘드리라는 것을 곧 깨달았다. 그래서 대신 날개를 골판지로 만들고 깃털은 올록볼록한 종이로 만들었다. 올록볼록한 종이가 따뜻하고 부드러워 보여 딱 좋았다. 날개의 아랫날 부분은 종이 깃털을 붙이는 대신 물감으로 칠해서 깊이감을 주었다. 어깨끈은 남은 수건을 잘라 만들어서 가방처럼 맬 수 있게 했다 (사진에는 없음). 사진 왼쪽은 날개의 앞부분, 오른쪽은 뒷부분이다.

아이는 날개를 무척 좋아했고, 할로윈이 끝나면 버릴까봐 걱정했다. 그래서 장식용으로 갖고 있기로 했다. 만드는 데는 2-3일 밤이 걸렸지만 보람 있었다.
