Beauty Today, Beast Tomorrow?

Recent events reminded me of the flight of an insect-like drone reported last year in Nature. As I watched the small machine flapping its delicate wings toward the light, its energy source (YouTube link), I felt as though I was watching the first steps of a baby. At the same time, I couldn’t help but wonder what it would grow into: a nimble rescuer, or a killer under unexpected circumstances?

Little My on a Swing

I made my first drawing with the Duke 551 Confucius Fude Nib Fountain Pen (which I got inspired by Ed’s drawings), and wondered how Little My (from Moominvalley) would like it.

After reading the comparison of Fude Nib fountain pens, I decided to get the one with the widest nib. I used to think pen strokes are too dry, and brushstrokes too wet, and this one seems to strike the right balance for me. It’s stiffer than I expected, but I like it since it gives a clean edge at the tip and a rough edge on the other side, which feels like carving.

Then – although I love admiring everyday objects, one point of drawing them is to see them from fresh angles, so I let My in.

Swollen, Guarded, and Tranquil View of the World / 부푼, 다잡힌, 고요한 시각

I was implementing Graham’s helpful suggestion when I couldn’t resist going wilder. I wanted to add hope to my rather desolate rendition of a lightening-stricken tree (below), but I didn’t want to make it an afterthought. The contrast between the strike and new leaves had to be the main theme. And probably the leaves wouldn’t need to be prominent—they just needed to be there, as “pennants”. So here they are.
