Repainted: Hanging On

I painted the background with watercolor and removed flaky strokes of pastel.

I’m not sure whether I should retouch gibbons. They also have pastel strokes but to me it seems less jarring than in the background. What do you think – shall I retouch the gibbons to make it look finished?

Thank you very much, everyone, for helpful advice! I think I will submit both this one and the other one. The deadline is today and the most pressing question for me is whether to retouch the gibbons. I’d appreciate your feedback!

  1. I’d just blend some blue in on the right, Yul, as that side looks washed out. Maybe try it first by taking an image and painting on the printout. On the first version it looked ok as it was a vignette, but I’m not sure it works now you’ve painted the left side.Best of luck.

    1. Thank you, Graham! It’s a brilliant idea to print it out and to try painting over it – I’ve printed it and I think I may try it for other paintings as well. As for the right hand side, it is in fact painted as well although it’s brighter. I’ll see if there’s something I can do.

    1. Thank you, Anna! I’m glad you like it, and it’s helpful to hear your thoughts since I feel it’s really hard to give a fresh look at my own work at this point after looking at it over and over again. I think I’ll leave the gibbons as they are.

  3. This sure is beyond deadline already. Still, I like it the way it is now. The unfinished style gives a sense of simplicity (that these creatures don’t ask much, for instance), and the ‘undetailed’ baby gibbon sparks a feel of possibilities (that it has a long way to go in life).

    Then again, that’s just me, of course. 🙂 Cheers!

    1. Thank you for your feedback, I appreciate it! I agree with your points that unfinished parts can feel lively.

      Regarding the exhibition – I’m glad that I had two pieces accepted, although not this one. I’ll post about it soon!
